Open wide… Lucerne, Switzerland.

A few photos from the Lucerne Carnival in Switzerland last week, shot over a roughly 22 hour period on Schmutzigen Donnerstag (Fat Thursday), from the Urknall or ‘Big Bang’ at 5am sharp, through bands playing Guggenmusik in the streets of the old town and the Fritschi Parade, to the early hours of the following morning. Known as the Fifth Season, the traditional Shrovetide Carnival in Lucerne is one of the largest and most colourful in Switzerland, and lasts from Fat Thursday to Shrove Tuesday.

Near the head of the Nadiža Valley, early winter snow and mist in the Julian Alps, Slovenia, shot on a slight detour while hiking the 330km Juliana Trail.

Farewell to you, 2023, you were quite a year. The year I finally got to visit the wonderful country that is South Korea - only my second trip outside Europe in over 12 years. A year in which I spent two weeks solo hiking through the spectacularly remote mountains along the border of North Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania. I returned to Austria - the first time since the pandemic - to explore and revisit parts of Styria, Burgenland and Lower Austria; and I hiked the incredibly rewarding and jaw-droppingly beautiful Tour des Combins in Switzerland.
