There are 13 apartments in Pilsen with interiors designed by the modern architect Adolf Loos – the largest number in Europe after Vienna. Pictured here, the apartment of Dr Josef Vogel at 12 Klatovska St, designed by Loos in the 1920s. The Czech town of Pilsen is European Capital of Culture 2015.

Grand-Hornu

Built in the early 19th century in Neoclassical style by French entrepreneur Henri De Gorge and designed by architect Bruno Renard, Grand-Hornu is surrounded by Utopian, neatly arranged streets of worker’s housing (pictured below), and developed into one of the largest mining companies in Belgium. It is now open as a museum, and since 2012 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with three other historic mines in Wallonia.
